Nebraska sophomore TJ Lateef in the running for starting quarterback

A Nebraska quarterback met with the media earlier this week and made it clear that he's still competing for the starting job. Sophomore TJ Lateef has been expected to back up the new quarterback, Anthony Colandrea, but Lateef was very clear that he's still competing for the starting job until he's told otherwise.

Lateef played in seven games as a freshman laast season. He threw for 904 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for 120 yards and four touchdown.

There are two other quarterbacks on the roster with Lateef. Colandrea transferred to Nebraska from UNLV, where he was the Mountain West Player of the Year last year. Daniel Kaelin returns to Nebraska after spending one season at Virginia.

There had been discussions about the quarterback possibly redshirting this season, but with the implementation of the new five-for-five rule, a redshirt is no longer an option. When asked about his plans for the season, Lateef was clear that he's still competing for the starting job every day.

"It's a competition every day. No matter where we're at in the facility, no matter if we lifting, no matter if we recovery, whatever we're doing, I'm trying to compete at the end of the day. No matter what we’re doing."

Nebraska opens the 2026 season on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Ohio Bobcats visit Memorial Stadium. Kickoff time is set for 11 a.m. CT and can be seen on FS1.
