Nevada's John Nelson voted the Ames Tribune Athlete of the Week

Nevada football player John Nelson was voted the Ames Tribune Athlete of the Week winner for the week of Nov. 16-22.

Nevada football player John Nelson (45) was voted the Ames Tribune Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 16-22.

Nelson won Athlete of the Week with 38% of the vote.

He led Nevada's dominant defensive effort during the Cubs' 27-6 victory over Bishop Heelan in the Class 3A state football championship game on Nov. 21 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

The defensive end finished the game with two sacks and three tackles for loss. He also broke up two passes and forced a fumble in helping Nevada hold Bishop Heelan to just 224 total yards of offense.
