New defensive scheme leaves Nebraska linebacker excited about 2026

A Nebraska linebacker is excited about the team's new defensive coaching staff and new schemes. Vincent Shavers Jr. met with the media earlier this week and talked about his role in Rob Aurich's defense.

Aurich came to Nebraska after spending one season at San Diego State. He replaces John Butler, who only spent one season in Lincoln before being dismissed by Matt Rhule.

The new defensive coordinator's hire brings about a philosophical shift for the defense, as he runs a 4-2-5. The Huskers have run a 3-3-5 scheme over the past three seasons.

Shavers Jr. played in all 13 games in 2025 with 12 starts. The junior linebacker recorded 61 tackles with 7.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, and one forced fumble.

When discussing the new defensive alignment and scheme, Shavers Jr. noted Aurich's willingness to move the linebacker around the field more than last year. He also reiterated that the team will play a fast, physical, and violent brand of football.

“What’s stood out to me the most is he (Aurich) moves me around the field a lot. I like that, and I like how he's saying pressure to go get the quarterback. We ain’t playing patient yet. We're playing fast, physical football out there and violent."

Nebraska opens the 2026 season on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Ohio Bobcats visit Memorial Stadium. Kickoff time is set for 11 a.m. CT and can be seen on FS1.
