New Mexico State will promote Taylor Mazzone from an offensive analyst to its tight ends coach. The move was first reported by The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman on Monday, Dec. 29.

Mazzone will replace former Aggies tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Nelson Fishback, who recently departed for Coastal Carolina to become its special teams coordinator and assistant quarterbacks coach.

Mazzone just completed his second season with the Aggies this year after being hired by NM State coach Tony Sanchez in 2024. He was Idaho State’s offensive coordinator in 2023 before heading to Las Cruces, and he’s also held offensive coaching roles at San Diego, Arizona, Texas A&M, UCLA and Arizona State.

Mazzone spent time in the 2024 season as the Aggies’ interim quarterbacks coach after former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tyler Wright was suspended and later fired after over 100 racist, sexist and homophobic posts on his X account came to light. Mazzone’s biography on NM State’s website credits him with the “development” of Parker Awad, Santino Marucci and Brandon Nuñez, three quarterbacks who started games for the Aggies in 2024.

Logan Fife, NM State’s starting quarterback in 2025, told the Las Cruces Sun-News earlier this year that forming a relationship with Mazzone was one of many reasons he decided to transfer to the Aggies.

Mazzone was a 2019 selection to the American Football Coaches Association’s 35 Under 35 program, meant to “identify and train” rising stars in the coaching world.
