New Penn State football QB Connor Barry not your average transfer | Reports

Penn State football has added an intriguing quarterback for the 2026 season.

Welcome senior transfer Connor Barry − a former Division III All-American.

Barry committed to Penn State and new head coach Matt Campbell this week via transfer from Christopher Newport University, according to national reports such as 247Sports. He should battle for the top backup spot behind expected starter Rocco Becht.

Barry (6-foot-1, 205 pounds) would complete a totally rebuilt Nittany Lion quarterback room. He will work alongside Iowa State transfers Becht and redshirt freshman Alex Manske, as well as incoming freshmen Peyton Falzone and Kase Evans.

Penn State, which has now gained 40 players from the recent NCAA transfer portal session, has the nation’s fifth-rated transfer class.

Barry began his career at Appalachian State before transferring to Christopher Newport in his native Virginia. There, he started for two seasons, throwing for 55 total touchdowns and just 10 interceptions. He also was a capable runner with nearly 600 yards and 18 more scores.

The left-hander ranked second nationally in passing efficiency last season in Division III. He earned second-team All-America honors and was a semifinalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, the D-III version of the Heisman.

Barry and the reshaped Penn State quarterback room will be led by new quarterbacks coach Jake Waters and his assistant, Trace McSorley.

The Lions lost all of their scholarship quarterbacks in the offseason. Seven-game starter Ethan Grunkeyemer and backups Jaxon Smolik and Bekkem Kristza transferred out, and senior Drew Allar is headed to the NFL Draft.
