Over the weekend, LSU football was reportedly closing in on a splash hire for its defensive coaching staff. Now, the deal is in doubt, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

Reports stated LSU was close to landing Syracuse co-defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson to spearhead the Tigers’ defensive line. Nothing was finalized and other suitors jumped in the mix for Robinson’s services.

“There’s some doubt at this stage that it ends up happening,” Zenitz said of Robinson potentially joining LSU.

Robinson remains under contract with Syracuse and was recently demoted by head coach Fran Brown. Robinson called the Syracuse defense in 2024 and 2025, but Brown tabbed Vince Kehres to lead the defense moving forward.

Robinson has some connections in the Big Ten. He is a former Penn State player and was a Penn State assistant under Joe Paterno and Bill O’Brien. At Penn State, Robinson met the now Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule and worked for Rhule at Temple and Baylor. Nebraska recently fired its defensive line coach, which gives Rhule a chance to pursue Robinson, a trusted assistant.

LSU’s defensive coaching staff remains well-positioned. The Tigers retained DC Blake Baker and most of Baker’s staff is expected to remain in Baton Rouge.
