NFL insider predicts Dianna Russini’s return to sports media ‘soon’

Mike Silver believes Dianna Russini will return to sports media soon, though he does not expect her to resume her NFL insider role immediately.

The former colleagues worked together at The Athletic before Russini resigned amid the fallout surrounding her connection with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Silver recently discussed her future on The Tom Tolbert Show, offering strong praise for her reporting ability.

“Really good friend of mine,” Silver said. “… Really, really proud of the journalism we did together and honestly just really bummed that we don’t get to continue it because we worked really well together.”

Silver also highlighted the relationships Russini built across the league. He said she regularly communicated with “players, coaches, owners, all of it,” while maintaining a deep understanding of league developments.

Silver’s assessment centers on Russini’s ability to build trust and access. Those skills remain valuable, even if her next role does not involve breaking inside information.

“I don’t think people understand the level of elite that she was performing at,” Silver said. He added that she was “competing at a very high level” while maintaining daily conversations throughout the league.

Silver believes Russini can rebuild her media career by taking a different route. A podcast, television role, football analysis position or broader sports platform could offer that path.

He first said, “I do know her family,” but mentioned, “She’s got a great family… I would say she is doing a lot better and her family’s doing well.”

Then he talked about Russini’s potential return to sports media.

“I do think she’s going to be back, probably not as an insider, at least in the short term,” Silver said. “But I think she’ll be back in this realm, probably talking about football and other things pretty soon.”

That distinction matters because NFL insiders depend heavily on organizational trust and source access. Russini may need time before returning to that exact position, but Silver clearly believes her reporting skills remain strong.

Right now, there is no confirmed landing spot. Still, Silver’s comments suggest the NFL media world may not have seen the last of Russini.
