Ohio has officially made its decision at quarterback.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Ohio University has named veteran quarterback Nick Poulos its starter for the 2026 season. Poulos will get the first opportunity to lead the Bobcats when they open the year on the road against Nebraska.

The decision gives Ohio an experienced option under center, even though Poulos has yet to make a start during his time with the Bobcats.

Poulos Gets His Shot

Poulos transferred to Ohio from El Camino Community College, joining the Bobcats after beginning his college career at the JUCO level.

Since arriving in Athens, Poulos has spent his time waiting behind other quarterbacks and preparing for an opportunity to take over the offense. Now, that opportunity has arrived.

While he doesn’t bring a long list of starts at the FBS level, his experience within Ohio’s program could be valuable as the Bobcats enter another season with expectations of competing near the top of the MAC.

Winning the job also shows the confidence Ohio’s coaching staff has in Poulos after watching the quarterback competition play out throughout the offseason and preseason camp.

A Tough First Test

Poulos won’t exactly have the luxury of easing into his new role.

His first career start for Ohio is set to come on the road at Nebraska, putting the veteran quarterback into a difficult environment immediately.

Playing in Lincoln will give Ohio an early look at what it has in its new starter. Poulos will be tasked with managing the offense, limiting mistakes and keeping the Bobcats within striking distance against a Big Ten opponent.

For a quarterback making his first start with the program, it represents both a major challenge and a major opportunity.

Ohio Turns to Experience for 2026

Ohio has established itself as one of the MAC’s stronger programs in recent seasons, and maintaining that success will require steady quarterback play.

Poulos doesn’t enter the season with the same starting experience as some quarterbacks around the conference, but he has spent enough time in the program to understand the offense and what will be expected of him.

Now he’ll finally get the chance to show what he can do with the starting job.

The quarterback competition is over in Athens. Nick Poulos is QB1, and his first test will come under the lights in Lincoln against Nebraska.
