Nick Saban clearly holds Ohio State football quarterback Julian Sayin in high regard.
The former Alabama coach recruited the 2024 five-star prospect to Tuscaloosa to play quarterback. Sayin was good enough to be an early enrollee and practiced with the Crimson Tide ahead of their College Football Playoff Rose Bowl semifinal against Michigan in December 2023.
However, when Saban retired in January of 2024, Sayin entered the transfer portal and opted to play for Ryan Day and Ohio State. After backing up Will Howard last season, Sayin earned the starting job this season and thrived with 1,872 passing yards and 19 touchdowns against three interceptions. The Buckeyes are 7-0 and the No. 1-ranked team in the country.
With the hindsight of Sayin’s success, Saban took a jab at himself on ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Saturday, Nov. 1, ahead of the Ohio State-Penn State game, about playing Sayin on the scout team while he was playing under Saban’s coaching staff.
“One point I think I’d like to make about Julian Sayin is he was at Alabama, and the coach at Alabama played him on the scout team for a whole year,” Saban said. “What a dumbass.”
