Nick Saban defends SEC after Big Ten title run raises college football debate

The college football season is quickly approaching, and the debates are already heating up. Which conference has the strongest outlook? Which programs face the greatest expectations? What team will ultimately take home the College Football Playoff national title?

One topic that has started to gain traction is the conference debate. For nearly two decades, the SEC was widely considered the strongest conference in college football. However, in recent years, it feels like the tide has started to shift. The Big Ten, specifically, has now won three consecutive national titles.

Nick Saban, who won national championships with Alabama and LSU, recently weighed in on the Big Ten versus SEC debate. From his perspective, a Big Ten school winning the title does not necessarily mean the conference is superior.

“I think the only reason people are talking about this is we dominated for so long, and we were so good, everybody makes a big deal out of being able to beat us,” Nick Saban said. “That doesn’t mean they’re better than us, and that doesn’t mean that just because you win the championship that you have a better conference. It just means you have one better team.”

End of a run?

It is an interesting response, to say the least, from the architect of the Alabama dynasty. Saban’s Crimson Tide program represented the SEC for 17 seasons as it dominated the college football landscape.

Alabama was not the only SEC program to claim national championships during that stretch. Since Saban took over in 2007, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, and Florida have each won at least one national title.

With that success in mind, the perception that the SEC was the best conference in college football was largely justified. However, that narrative has begun to change, and the results are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Currently, Georgia and Texas are viewed as favorites to win the national championship. However, only Georgia has accomplished that feat within the last five years. Since 2023, the Big Ten has established itself as the premier conference in college football.

That is not to say the landscape cannot change. College football is constantly evolving, and another conference could reclaim the top spot. However, as things stand, the Big Ten’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

So, for now, the argument can be made that the Big Ten’s three consecutive national titles have cemented it as the best conference in college football.

Will that change in 2026?
