Nick Saban Tried to Convince Lane Kiffin to Pass on LSU Offer & Stay at Ole Miss?

Despite rumors that college football coaching legend Nick Saban pushed Lane Kiffin to leave Ole Miss high and dry last season to take the HC job at LSU, the former Alabama coach revealed new details of that infamous conversation on Saturday, and it seems he made a good case for Kiffin to stay in Oxford.
There is no bigger game on the Week 3 college football schedule than Kiffin’s return to Ole Miss as the new leader of LSU’s football program. The bold decision to leave the Rebels for the Tigers right before the 2025 playoffs — along with many other career choices that have befuddled CFB fans and experts over the years — has made the coach public enemy No. 1 in Mississippi.
Another well-known individual who doesn’t have many fans in the state is Saban. Of course, that comes from many years of his Alabama teams smashing Ole Miss during their regular-season matchups. However, the iconic coach drew more ire last year when Kiffin revealed he had sought Saban’s advice as he was trying to make his decision on whether to stay with Ole Miss or go to LSU.
Many around the game believe Saban probably pushed his one-time offensive coordinator at Alabama to go to the more prestigious program. However, during today’s edition of College Gameday, the 74-year-old offered up new details on that chat, and it looks like he made a solid case for Kiffin to stay with the Rebels.
“Where do you think you can win? Where do you think you fit? And I also say, ‘Why can’t you win at where you are now? You have a great quarterback. You have a great running back. You’re in the playoffs. You have a chance to win the national championship. So why do you have to go someplace else?’ So, but everybody makes their own decision. I don’t tell anybody where to go.”
Saban will always be a villain in Mississippi. However, it sure looks like he wasn’t the old mentor that pushed his pupil to leave Ole Miss. Instead, Kiffin made his own decision and wasn’t swayed by an elder of college football.
