Nick Saban’s Daughter Fights Tears in Emotional Message to Father: “I Cried”

Having spent 17 years at Alabama, Nick Saban collected memories of six national championships, endless big games, and packed stadiums. But for his daughter, Kristen Saban, it was more than just a football story. Now she is seeing her father from a different angle, and it hit harder than she expected.

After watching ESPN’s upcoming documentary on Nick Saban, Kristen shared an emotional message on her Instagram Story. She admitted that she thought she already knew the story because she had lived through so much of it. But she wasn’t prepared for what came when nostalgia hit her.

“I cried. I laughed,” she wrote. “I remembered things I had forgotten and understood things I was probably too young to understand at the time. And when it ended, I just sat there in complete awe, sobbing from immense happiness and some grief.”

That is quite a reaction to a football documentary. But that is also the point Kristen Saban seemed to be making. She wasn’t watching Nick Saban, the coach. She was watching the life story of her father.

For most fans, Nick Saban’s Alabama career was measured in championships, rivalry wins, and the occasional fourth-quarter meltdown that became a national talking point. But for his family, those years came with a much longer list of memories. Kristen’s message eventually moved away from football.

“Yes, it’s about football,” she wrote. “But it’s really about so much more than football. It’s about people. Relationships. Sacrifice. Belief. Discipline. Family. And the impact one life can have on so many others.”

The documentary had already started getting people talking before Kristen shared her emotional reaction. When ESPN unveiled the trailer in August, she appeared alongside the project in a joint Instagram post. Former players and fans quickly filled the comments, but Kristen didn’t have much to say. Just three words: “This is special.”

At the time, it was easy to read that as a daughter supporting her dad. After seeing the finished project, those words feel a little different. And now, she’s bringing it back to the person at the center of it all.

“Dad, I’ve always been proud to be your daughter,” she added. “But watching your story told this way made me proud in an entirely different way. What a life. What a legacy. And what a gift it is to call you Dad.”

That is the emotional hook ESPN probably hoped the six-part SABAN would uncover, as there’s more to the story than what happened in Tuscaloosa. The series goes back through Nick Saban’s earlier stops at Michigan State, LSU, and the Dolphins before digging deep into his Alabama run. And some of the footage could surprise even the coach himself.

Nick Saban revealed that Alabama had archived behind-the-scenes footage of team meetings and locker-room moments without him knowing about it. That includes footage surrounding one of the most famous decisions of his career, and that’s telling Tua Tagovailoa he would replace Jalen Hurts at halftime of the 2018 CFP championship game.

The guest list is pretty ridiculous, too. ESPN spoke with more than 70 people for the project, pulling in names from different corners of Nick Saban’s career. Tagovailoa, Hurts, Kirby Smart, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, and Bill Belichick are among those who share their memories. That gives the project plenty of football history to work with.

Kristen’s reaction suggests the most interesting parts may be the moments between the championships. She ended her message with a warning to fans ahead of the October 8 premiere on ESPN Originals.

“I promise, y’all aren’t ready,” she concluded.

Maybe she knows something the rest of us don’t. After all, she watched the story as Nick Saban’s daughter. This time, she got to watch it as someone looking back at the life behind the legend.
