NMSU QB Logan Fife's status uncertain for UTEP, Adam Damante starting is in play

New Mexico State’s starting quarterback is not 100% determined for its upcoming rivalry game.

Starter Logan Fife took a big hit on a quarterback draw in the third quarter of the Aggies’ 42-9 defeat against Tennessee on Saturday, Nov. 15. While he remained in the game for one more play, backup Adam Damante played the remainder of the contest.

NM State coach Tony Sanchez said Fife is feeling “good” during a press conference on Monday, Nov. 17, but that he was “limping around” on Sunday evening when the two spoke. He’s operating under the belief that Fife will play against UTEP on Saturday, Nov. 22, but Damante getting the start was not ruled out.

“We’d assume so… unless something happens or something deviates,” Sanchez said in response to a question on whether Fife would start against the Miners. Adam did a good job, too. He showed that he’s got a live arm and can do some good things, so I think they’re gonna have to prepare for both.”

Tennessee defensive lineman Daevin Hobbs (5) pressures New Mexico State quarterback Logan Fife (4) during Tennessee's game against New Mexico State in Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., on Nov. 15, 2025.

Fife jogged to the sideline after taking the hit from Volunteers linebacker Jadon Perlotte. He had extended time to shake off the injury due to the Aggies taking a timeout, and returned to action for the following fourth-and-four play. Fife’s incompletion there was his last play of the game.

“He wasn’t feeling 100%,” Sanchez said after Saturday’s game. “He was a little banged up, and we talked about it a little bit, and it was a great opportunity to get Adam in there.”

Fife completed 23 of his 34 passes for 166 yards, while Damante completed 12 of his 18 passes for 147 yards. Each threw an interception, with Damante’s being returned for a touchdown by UT defensive back William Wright after a low pass was tipped up in the air by Volunteers defensive lineman Tyre West.

Sanchez confirmed one player out for Saturday’s game, as linebacker Tyler Martinez will miss yet another game due to a high ankle sprain. He hasn’t played since suffering the injury during NM State’s 38-20 defeat against New Mexico on Sept. 27. Running back Kadarius Calloway is questionable after incurring a rib injury on a tackle last Saturday.
