New head coach Jimmy Rogers and the Iowa State football program will be starting fresh for its 2027 recruiting cycle. Offensive lineman Will Slagle, the No. 2 overall prospect in the state of Iowa according to the 247 Sports Composite, has decommitted from the Cyclones.
The Grinnell native announced his decision on social media on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
Slagle is a four-star prospect, according to the 247 Sports Composite and is a top 20-ranked interior offensive lineman nationally.
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman originally committed to Iowa State during a pregame tailgate leading into the Cyclones’ 38-14 senior day win over Kansas on Nov. 22.

At the time of his commitment, Slagle chose Iowa State over Auburn, Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern and Stanford.
His decision comes in the wake of Matt Campbell’s departure to Penn State and the transition to Rogers’ tenure in Ames. Slagle was the first and only commit, to date, in the program’s 2027 recruiting class.
Slagle has several Iowa State family connections, including his father, Don, and his uncle, Dean, who both played for the Cyclones.
