‘None of Them Played Anyone Good,’ ‘Played a Bunch of Nobodies’ — CFB Fans Call Out SEC for Boasting Perfect 16–0 Record in Week 1

The SEC opened the 2026 college football season with an impressive 16–0 record in Week 1, winning by an average of 36.6 points per game.
The perfect start quickly became a talking point, with SEC media and fans highlighting the conference’s dominant opening weekend. However, not everyone was impressed. Many college football fans pointed out that most of the wins came against weaker opponents.
SEC’s Perfect 16-0 Record Sparks Debate
A 16-0 record looks impressive on paper, but the opponents have led to plenty of criticism.
13 of the SEC’s 16 wins came against Group of Five, FCS, or lower-tier nonconference opponents. Several teams also won by huge margins. Georgia dominated Tennessee State 63-3, while Texas A&M blanked Missouri State 50-0. Oklahoma also shut out UTEP 51-0, and South Carolina cruised past Kent State 57-0.

The conference had only two games decided by a single score. Auburn needed a late goal-line stand to beat Baylor 17-16, while No. 9 Ole Miss narrowly defeated Louisville 41-38 on a walk-off 48-yard field goal.
That has made it difficult for some fans to take the SEC’s perfect record as proof of conference dominance.
Social media quickly filled with reactions from fans who questioned the value of the SEC’s Week 1 record.
One fan pointed to the strength of the schedule, saying, “Ofc (of course) the SEC don’t start falling apart until they beat up on each other.”
Tim Earle made a similar point, arguing that the SEC had yet to face enough quality competition: “None of them played anyone good…”
Another fan dismissed most of the matchups altogether, saying, “They mostly all played throwaway games.”
Eric Brewster took aim at the SEC, suggesting the conference could struggle when the stakes rise later in the season: “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. Big Ten will bend you over again come bowl and playoff season.”
Philup Graves also mocked the excitement surrounding the record, comparing it to celebrating a routine win over a weaker opponent: “This is on par with Michigan storming the field after beating Western Michigan. Come on, man, we have standards, and beating trash cans ain’t it!”
Casey Dodson was even more blunt, questioning both the quality of the SEC’s opponents and Ole Miss’ defense after its narrow win over Louisville: “Played a bunch of nobodies and the Ole Miss D is actually HORRID.”
Some fans went as far as predicting the SEC’s perfect start would quickly disappear once conference play gets underway. One commenter wrote: “So overrated. By week 9, they will be .500 in conference play.”
Another fan focused on the scheduling itself, arguing that the perfect record was largely a product of favorable Week 1 matchups: “Not that hard when they all scheduled cupcake teams.”

Not every SEC performance can be dismissed, though. LSU’s dominant win over Clemson gave the conference one of its biggest victories of the opening weekend, with No. 11 LSU handling a Clemson team many expected to be ranked but that had actually been left out of the preseason poll.
Still, the criticism is unlikely to disappear after one weekend.
