Northwestern football continues to turn heads this season, and the Wildcats are once again entering a Big Ten matchup as significant favorites.
After a thrilling 24-21 road victory over Michigan State, Northwestern returns to New Ryan Field on Saturday to face Rutgers, opening as a 16.5-point favorite.
It is another sign of how much expectations have changed for a Northwestern team that has quickly established itself as one of the Big Ten’s more intriguing programs.
The Wildcats enter Saturday’s matchup with a 5-1 record, including a 2-1 mark in conference play, and have won three consecutive games.
Their latest victory might have been their most dramatic yet.
Trailing Michigan State 21-13 in the fourth quarter, Northwestern rallied behind quarterback Aidan Chiles, who scored a rushing touchdown before connecting with tight end Alex Honig for the game-tying two-point conversion.
The Wildcats then came up with one of the biggest defensive plays of their season when Brendan Flakes blocked a Michigan State field goal attempt with less than two minutes remaining.
That gave Chiles and Northwestern’s offense one final opportunity.
Taking over with just over a minute remaining, Chiles helped lead the Wildcats downfield before kicker Jackson Kleather drilled a 34-yard field goal in the closing seconds to secure the 24-21 victory.
It was an impressive display of resilience from a Northwestern team that continues finding different ways to win.
Now, the Wildcats return home with another opportunity to build on that momentum. Rutgers, however, is coming off an impressive victory of its own.
The Scarlet Knights defeated Maryland 37-30 on Saturday, overcoming a 23-13 halftime deficit to earn their first Big Ten victory of the season.
Quarterback Dylan Lonergan threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, while wide receiver KJ Duff recorded 113 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
The victory demonstrated that Rutgers is capable of putting together explosive offensive performances despite its difficult start to the season.
And while the Scarlet Knights enter Saturday with a 2-4 record, Northwestern cannot afford to overlook an opponent coming off a confidence-building conference win.
Still, the opening betting line suggests the Wildcats are expected to control the matchup.
Northwestern opened as a 16.5-point favorite, with the over/under initially sitting around 58.5 points.
For a team that entered the season with plenty of questions surrounding its offense, being favored by more than two touchdowns against a Big Ten opponent reflects the progress Northwestern has made.
Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has transformed the Wildcats into a much more dangerous offensive team, with Chiles leading a balanced attack capable of producing through both the passing and rushing games.
Northwestern is averaging more than 33 points per game through six contests, a significant reason behind its impressive start.
The Wildcats have also been particularly effective at home, winning all four of their home games this season.
That includes their memorable 34-13 victory over Penn State in the first game at New Ryan Field, followed by a dominant 45-14 win over Ball State.
Now, Northwestern has another opportunity to defend its home field and continue building momentum.
But the stakes are beginning to grow.
With the Wildcats sitting at 5-1 and gaining national recognition, the possibility of competing for a College Football Playoff spot is becoming a storyline worth following.
Northwestern still has a difficult road ahead, and there is plenty of football left to be played before any serious playoff conclusions can be drawn.
However, continuing to win games and climb the national rankings would only strengthen the Wildcats’ position as the season progresses.
That makes Saturday’s matchup against Rutgers particularly important.
For head coach David Braun, the challenge will be ensuring Northwestern remains focused despite entering as a heavy favorite.
The Wildcats have already shown they can win convincingly and battle through adversity in close games.
Now, they must demonstrate that they can handle the expectations that come with being a ranked team.
Rutgers will arrive in Evanston with momentum of its own and an opportunity to pull off a significant road upset.
Northwestern, meanwhile, has a chance to improve to 6-1, remain undefeated at home and continue its impressive rise.
The Wildcats have earned the respect of oddsmakers with their performances through six games.
Now, the goal is to keep proving they deserve it.
Northwestern and Rutgers will kick off Saturday, Oct. 24, at 11 a.m. CT from New Ryan Field in Evanston.
