The Alabama football team held its final on-campus practice on Sunday before traveling to Pasadena, Calif., for a College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup against Indiana in the Rose Bowl. Here are a few observations from the media viewing period:
*** There were no players wearing black jerseys, signifying non-contact status, other than quarterbacks, who are always in black. That’s good news for the Crimson Tide, which was beset with minor injuries toward the end of the regular season. That doesn’t necessarily mean every player will be available to play against the Hoosiers, but it’s a strong indication that a number of players who were either out or playing with pain in the SEC title game against Georgia three weeks ago are much better off as of Sunday.
*** During the media viewing period, DE LT Overton was in a crimson jersey and a full participant with the defensive line. Overton, one of UA’s top pass rushers, has missed Alabama‘s postseason to date with an undisclosed medical condition, but was recently cleared to play.
*** Several incoming freshmen practiced, including highly touted WR Cederian Morgan, who was immediately noticeable for his size. Wearing jersey No. 19, Morgan (6-4, 210 pounds) looked sharp in individual drills. Other participating freshmen included QB Jeff Thomalla, TE Mack Sutter, OL Chris Booker, DL Kam Johnson, DL Corey Howard, CB Zyan Gibson and LB Zay Hall.
*** Alabama (11-3) will travel to Pasadena on Monday to begin on-site preparations for its game against Indiana (13-0) (Thursday, Jan. 1, 3 p.m. CT, ESPN).
