Notre Dame is gearing up to face the most explosive offense they've face yet in 2026. The Purdue Boilermakers have scored 44 points, 36 points and 38 points respective in their first three matchups and they've faced two P4 opponents in their last two games. The Boilermakers also rank 30th in the country in yards per play (6.8), 13th in the country in yards per pass attempt (10.3) and 3rd in the country in passing yards per game (366.7). 

The Fighting Irish defense has had an exceptionally hot start to the season but will be facing an offense that's humming right now. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash has proved some of his doubters wrong, but a strong performance Saturday afternoon should put even more minds at ease about this unit. Here's the three key matchups to watch for Notre Dame's defense in the battle for the Shillelagh Trophy. 

NB CHRISTIAN GRAY 

It's been a relatively quiet start to the season for senior nickel corner Christian Gray. That's certainly not a bad thing, but he's faced few teams who's been able to test the slot corner position. Wisconsin had some success, but the majority of it came on a double move. Rice was a triple option team and Michigan State had very little success targeting the St. Louis native. Yet, Gray only has four tackles and one pass breakup through three games. That's going to be subject to change this week, but last season, the nickel corner hurt the Irish defense at times against the Boilermaker offense. Now, it's Gray's opportunity to leave his mark on the battle for the Shillelagh trophy. 

Matchup To Watch: Purdue receivers Asaad Waseem and Xavier Townsend both play their fair share of snaps in the slot. Those two receivers are also quarterback Ryan Browne's favorite targets. Through three games, Waseem and Townsend have combined for 49 targets, 39 receptions, 588 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The next closest receiver has been targeted 12 times according to Pro Football Focus. Gray will have his opportunity to make some signature highlight-reel plays on the road inside of Ross-Ade Stadium. He'll be tested in volume this week.  

DE BRYCE YOUNG

Over the course of the offseason, one player that was consistently on our breakout watch list was junior defensive end Bryce Young. So far, through three games, he's lived up to those expectations. The 6-6, 260-pound defensive end has recorded six total pressures, two hits plus sacks on the quarterback and currently leads the team in tackles for loss with 3.5. The North Carolina native has yet to miss a tackle according to PFF and has six total run stops through three games. He's on pace for a massive season and he'll have the opportunity to add onto that this weekend. 

Matchup To Watch: Purdue left tackle Nuku Mafi has struggled through three games this season. The 6-4, 325-pound tackle has allowed seven total pressures this season. He's not the most athletic tackle that the Boilermakers have had. Mafi isn't overly comfortable in space and can get impatient as a pass blocker from time to time. This is a matchup that Young should win, and win convincingly. 

AARON HENRY

We haven't talked much this season about Notre Dame's new co-defensive coordinator, defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator Aaron Henry. Some of that has to do with the types of offenses they've faced this season. Well, Saturday afternoon that's going to be subject to change. Purdue has the best passing offense, by far, the Irish have faced so far this season. The Boilermakers rank 3rd in the country in passing yards per game, 13th in the country in yards per attempt, 30th in the country in yards per completion and in touchdown passes. 

This is going to be a great litmus test for this Fighting Irish secondary and will be a great evaluator for Henry as a pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. This unit has proven their worth in run support, and their ability to generate turnovers still remains. But some big plays allowed has overshadowed some of their in-game success. Saturday afternoon is a prime opportunity to silence some of those critics.
