Notre Dame finds out its CFP fate. Are the Irish in or out?

It was a nail biting experience watching the College Football Playoff selection show, and for Notre Dame it was a tough watch.
Alabama, who jumped the Irish the week previous, stayed in the No. 9 spot, even though the Crimson Tide lost to Georgia in the SEC Championship game taking one of the at-large spots. The Irish hoped they could stay ahead of Miami for the final non-automatic bid, but it wasn’t meant to be as the committee moved the Hurricanes over the Irish with no new data points for either team.
This wasn’t what many had expected, especially considering that Notre Dame had been ranked over Miami in the previous ranking. There will be plenty of talking heads wondering if the system needs to change, considering No. 20 Tulane and No. 24 James Madison made the field of 12-teams. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Irish are the better team than both of them, as they were announced as the first team out of the rankings.
The 2025 season will always be a big what if, especially considering how Notre Dame had played down the stretch coming off what they did in 2024. Could this cause a ripple and change the format going forward? It could, but as of right now, there’s a bitter taste in South Bend, and will be for a while.
