Notre Dame has had an extremely high opinion of a 2027 local wide receiver. That makes the recent recruiting news even harder.

Notre Dame football is steadily putting together another tremendous recruiting class in the 2027 cycle. With an extremely talented quarterback, another outstanding secondary group, and potentially elite hauls on the offensive and defensive lines, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are doing a terrific overall job.

One position group that still does have some question marks, however, is at wide receiver. Assistant coach Mike Brown put together a really nice class in 2026, but this cycle has been more of a struggle so far. They received a commitment from underrated Colorado standout Jackson Coleman, and are in a great spot with Irish legacy Julius Jones Jr., so things should get better.

It does appear that Notre Dame has continued to fade with 2027 Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel wide receiver Quentin Burrell, a dynamic passing game weapon right from Notre Dame’s backyard. Over the last couple of months, the Irish have been steadily losing steam. It appears that Burrell will not only most likely land with Notre Dame, but he also could be trending toward a hated program rival.

Steve Wiltfong from Rivals has put in an expert prediction for Burrell to land with the Michigan Wolverines, which would be a substantial blow. Missing out on a talented player in your own backyard is hard enough. Losing them to a school and fanbase that you despise is even worse.

As of today, the Irish staff remains the heavy favorite for Jones. If they are able to land him, along with Coleman, there’s a chance that Notre Dame could stay at two wide receiver commits. Don’t be surprised, however, if the team continues to push hard for 2027 Malvern (Pa.) Prep standout Cade Cooper

Quentin Burrell’s recruiting background

Burrell is considered to be a four-star and a top-100 overall player by the majority of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Burrell is rated as the No. 83 overall player, the No. 14 wide receiver, and the No. 6 player in the state of Illinois for the 2027 recruiting class. Burrell is one of the headliners in an outstanding crop of talent from the state of Illinois in this cycle.

If you aren’t impressed by Burrell’s recruiting rankings, then you will be with his offer list. Some of the top programs that have offered the Chicago star include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee, Miami, Indiana, Auburn, Nebraska, South Carolina, Louisville, Arizona State, Iowa, Missouri, NC State, Missouri, Illinois, Maryland, UNC, Vanderbilt, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Minnesota, Kansas State, Northwestern, Syracuse, Purdue, Stanford, and Kansas, among others.

The 6-3, 175-pound pass catcher put together a fantastic sophomore season in 2024 for Mount Carmel. Burrell managed to haul in 75 receptions for 1,257 yards and 18 touchdowns during that tremendous campaign. Burrell continued his dominance as a junior, where he hauled in another 67 receptions for 1,139 yards and 16 touchdowns. This is one of the most productive pass catchers in the entire 2027 class.
