SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame football dipped back into the transfer portal for more multiyear help on Thursday Jan. 15, this time reportedly securing a commitment from Oregon defensive tackle Tionne Gray.

On3.com had the first report.

A redshirt sophomore from St. Louis, Gray is a former four-star recruit who stands 6-foot-6 and 336 pounds. That instantly makes him the second-heaviest player on Notre Dame’s roster, trailing only fellow defensive tackle Sean Sevillano Jr., a third-year sophomore who packs 340 pounds on his 6-2 frame.

A product of Hazelwood Central High School, Gray also considered Missouri upon entering the portal after Oregon’s College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Indiana.

Gray played 232 total snaps (15.5 average) across 13 games for the Ducks, including all three CFP games. Just 15 of those snaps, combined, came in regular-season games against the Hoosiers and Washington.

He also missed back-to-back games in November against Minnesota and USC with an undisclosed ailment.

Gray finished with 18 tackles, including two for loss, plus a blocked field goal against James Madison. Oregon, which led just 13-3 early in the second quarter, went on to a 51-34 first-round CFP win.

Pro Football Focus credited him with just one quarterback hurry in 2025 and gave him an overall grade of 65.7. That would’ve ranked eighth among Irish defensive tackles, placing him in line with captain Donovan Hinish (65.3), who retired after the season due to a lingering shoulder injury.

In 2024, despite enrolling early at Oregon, Gray played just 23 snaps on defense and took a redshirt.

With Gray in the fold, the Irish have added eight players through the portal since Monday. Five of them previously played at Big Ten schools, including Gray, former Ohio State wideouts Mylan Graham and Quincy Porter, former Michigan cornerback Jayden Sanders and former Purdue kicker Spencer Porath.

The other three imports transferred from Alabama (Keon Keeley), Colorado (DJ McKinney) and Pittsburgh (Francis Brewu).
