SOUTH BEND — In the end, Notre Dame football won’t be headed back to the College Football Playoff after all.

Sunday’s long-awaited reveal kept Alabama at No. 9 despite a one-sided loss in the SEC Championship Game and jumped idle Miami (10-2) from No. 12 ahead of Notre Dame (10-2), leaving the Irish on the outside looking in.

The Hurricanes’ season-opening home win over Notre Dame on Aug. 31 proved too much for the Irish to overcome once the two teams were back-to-back in the rankings.

Notre Dame was the first team out, followed by Brigham Young (11-2), which lost for a second time this year to No. 4 Texas Tech in the Big 12 title game.
