One Fox Sports college football analyst isn’t high on Notre Dame and their title-contention chances as the college football season kicks off this week. Many believe that the Fighting Irish will emerge as one of the top teams in the country and ultimately find their way back to the college football playoffs and ultimately the national championship game.

But Fox Sports college football analyst R.J. Young isn’t sold on one facet of the team that can make or break their title chances. He explained on First Things First OT with Danny Parkins.
“I just don’t know about their running back room in Aneyas Williams… Many people forgot that they lost not one, but two first round tailbacks at that position last year. And not just Jeremiyah Love, but Jadarian Price. It’s a team that predicates its success on running the football, and that’s why its defense was so dominant last year.
He added, “If Aeneas Williams turns out to be another Jeremiah Love, then absolutely, let’s have a conversation about them playing for a national championship. I’m just not ready to put them there just yet.”
In a quote obtained by 16 News Now in July, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman spoke highly of Williams.
“Aneyas, he’s a talented football player that when he’s been given the opportunity has made some really big plays and done some really great things in big moments,” Freeman said. “Now he’s going to be in a position to get that opportunity a lot more. And so I’m very confident in Aneyas.”
He also spoke positively of the running back room.
“It’s a great room that I’m excited to see them develop,” Freeman said. “They’ve been working their tails off this summer but to see them develop in fall camp and then, you know what, then the world will see them. Then they’ll be thrust into the light and it’ll be a reflection of all the work they’ve done.”
