The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will begin the season against Wisconsin on Saturday. Head coach Marcus Freeman has his plate full, and the season opener will be an early determination of where the Fighting Irish are headed.
Especially if they can go up against Wisconsin QB Colton Joseph, according to Freeman, Notre Dame’s ability to contain Joseph will play a big role in the outcome, per Mike Berardino of The South Bend Tribune.
He issued a stark warning.

“Wisconsin QB is as fast and athletic as any QB we’ll see,” Freeman said. Additionally, Freeman wants the special teams to come through.
“We have to expect the unexpected on special teams,” he said.
Joseph is about to embark on his first season with the Badgers. From 2023 to 2025, he played for Old Dominion. While there, Joseph threw for 4,251 yards and ran for 1,654 yards. Altogether, he recorded 56 touchdowns, 32 passing and 24 rushing. He also threw 15 interceptions.
In 2025, Joseph threw for 2,624 passing yards and 21 passing touchdowns. As a result, he was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year.
Last year, Notre Dame finished 10-2 but missed the College Football Playoffs. Ultimately, they declined to participate in other bowl games.
In the lead-up to the season, Notre Dame is expected to be a title contender. A huge chunk of the roster has returned, QB CJ Carr remains at the helm, and All-American cornerback Leonard Moore is back to lead the secondary unit.
The Fighting Irish will play the Badgers at 6:30 pm EST at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
