Notre Dame just took a big step with a top 2028 quarterback. It has been a great recovery after the Trey Tagliaferri saga.

Notre Dame football and 2028 quarterback recruiting took a significant step forward after four-star Princeton (NJ) Hun School signal-caller Lukas Prock released his top-5 school list.

The Fighting Irish were included alongside Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, and Indiana, signaling that head coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame staff have been able to rebuild momentum with one of the top overall quarterbacks in the 2028 recruiting class. This was a very good step and recovery.

As I previously reported, Notre Dame was set to take another big swing at Prock following the decommitment of fellow New Jersey quarterback Trey Tagliaferri, who ultimately landed at Oklahoma. Once Tagliaferri was off the board, Freeman, quarterback coach Gino Guidugli, and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock were prepared to be patient with their next steps. The first order of business was checking back in with Prock, who was one of only four quarterbacks holding a Notre Dame offer in the 2028 class.

It appears that, for now at least, the staff has been able to smooth things over and is trending in a positive direction.

Where Notre Dame stands in Prock’s recruitment

Of the five schools in Prock’s top group, it is believed that Notre Dame, Indiana, and Ohio State have potentially separated themselves. That said, as a 2028 recruit, things can change quickly. There is no firm decision timeline on the table, and this is not a recruitment that will happen overnight. Notre Dame is going to have to remain patient if they want to land Prock in the end.

There is a layer to this recruitment that makes it unique. When Notre Dame accepted a commitment from Tagliaferri a few weeks ago, it essentially signaled that the staff did not want to wait on Prock and liked Tagliaferri that much. Adding another wrinkle, the two quarterbacks train together with the same private quarterback coach, Tony Racioppi, in New Jersey.

Despite that dynamic, things are currently in a good spot between Prock and Notre Dame.

Prock’s recruiting background

Prock has been pursued by a long list of top programs in college football. His offer list has expanded to 40 total offers, including Georgia, LSU, Oregon, Penn State, Nebraska, and Auburn, among many others.

On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the 6-2, 190-pound passer is rated as the No. 69 overall player, the No. 6 quarterback, and the No. 3 player from the state of New Jersey for the 2028 recruiting class. He holds four-star status across each of the major recruiting platforms.

Prock is coming off a dynamic sophomore season at the Hun School, where he threw for 4,330 yards and 41 touchdown passes against only seven interceptions. He also rushed for a touchdown while averaging well over 10 yards per carry. While he profiles as a pocket passer, Prock has enough movement skills to create big plays outside of structure and when extending the pocket, which is why so many elite programs have made a strong push for him over the last several months.

What comes next for Notre Dame at quarterback

While I think Notre Dame can win this battle, I do expect the staff to do their homework on other quarterbacks across the 2028 class. Prock is the only uncommitted quarterback on Notre Dame’s offer board right now. There could be some expansion of that board in the future, although I don’t expect that to happen at a high volume or anytime soon.

Prock is the guy for Notre Dame right now. The Fighting Irish need to continue pushing the right buttons to give themselves the best chance to land him in the end.
