Despite still being right in the middle of putting together the 2027, Notre Dame is already working hard to build its board for the 2028 class. That included an early March scholarship offer to Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs High School edge Cam Toomey. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound prospect is one of the top players in the Northeast and is ranked as a Top 100 recruit nationally according to 247Sports.
It's easy to see why Notre Dame already jumped in the mix along with Penn State, Rutgers, Boston College, California and others.
“I was in my room playing video games when my mom called me in the living room with (director of player personnel) DJ Bryant on the phone who is one of Notre Dame’s defensive line recruiters,” Toomey told Irish Breakdown. “He and James Franklin and their staff offered me when they were all still at Penn State. He told me how he and (defensive line) Coach (Charlie) Partridge both agreed that I have all the talent it takes to play at Notre Dame and that they have me very high on their 2028 recruiting board, so they offered me right there.”
Toomey is slated to visit Notre Dame this weekend, where he hopes to build connections with the rest of Notre Dame’s staff.
“They’re all awesome people and Coach Partridge and the d-line staff definitely know what they’re doing and know how to develop players which is one of the most important things to me about a coach,” Toomey said. “When I think of Notre Dame, I think of a very traditionally good team who can develop players and turn them into NFL prospects. I’ve always been a fan of Notre Dame and their football program, so to have a chance to plan under Coach (Marcus) Freeman would be an amazing experience.”
Toomey has a very busy spring coming up, with visits to Rutgers (March 7), Ohio State (March 28), North Carolina (April 4), Syracuse (April 7), Texas A&M (April 9-11), Maryland (April 18) and Penn State (April 25) – all in addition to his visit to Notre Dame. These trips should allow Toomey to get a very important early start on recruiting.
“It definitely is early for me during my recruiting process but I’m definitely keeping all doors open at least until the end of my junior year which is where I’ll likely make my decision,” he said.
For Toomey, the biggest quality in Notre Dame’s favor is Marcus Freeman. The head coach, now entering his fifth year at the helm, has the qualities Toomey is looking for at the next level.
“I think Coach Freeman has a real vision for what he wants at Notre Dame,” he said. “He’s building a culture that’s tough, disciplined, and about more than just football. You can tell he cares about developing guys on and off the field and that’s something that stands out to me.”
This weekend will be Toomey's first trip to Notre Dame and will give him a chance to see the program first hand.
