Notre Dame decided to jump into the action early on a talented Class of 2028 offensive lineman last week, extending an offer to Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic offensive tackle Wyatt VanBoening. As soon as the Irish made the offer, VanBoening decided to take a trip to campus.
The 6-foot-7, 280-pound prospect has excellent upside. While the Irish are primarily focused on Class of 2027 prospects, VanBoening’s athletic abilities were too good to pass up on an early offer, which was a surprise for the big man.
“I got a call from Coach (Joe) Rudolph and Coach (Rob) Delaney,” VanBoening said. “I was really excited about it and was honestly shocked when they told me. Coach Delaney reached out the other day and told me that they wanted to get on a call soon. My first impression of them was that they’re an honest and good group of coaches. They talked about how they keep their O-line group close.”
The offer meant a lot for VanBoening, who excels on a successful program in the Chicagoland area. Given Carmel Catholic’s background as a religious school, Notre Dame is a good fit for what he’s looking for.
“Notre Dame as a brand is a consistent program that has a strong history of developing their players especially offensive lineman,” he said. “When I think of Notre Dame I think of great football and great education.”
The offer prompted a visit to the South Bend campus, where he was impressed with the coaching staff, specifically offensive line coach Joe Rudolph.
“I thought the visit went really well,” VanBoening noted. “I was more focused on taking in the area, the school, and the coaches rather than the facilities because of the significance of the education and the meaning of the school. Coach Rudolph and I talked for a long time about not just football, but life and what he expects out of his players, and how he likes to choose not just great players for their system, but people that fit into their system and the culture that they’ve established.
“They had former football alumni helping out and mentoring players,” he added. “I felt that really impressed me because it showed the program’s results and how successful they are at getting players to where they want to be, whether that’s in football and going to the NFL, or post-football when they eventually get into a professional setting.”
VanBoening said he plans to visit Indiana and Wisconsin as well this spring and summer, and added that he will be making a verbal pledge “not long after” his junior season concludes this fall.
