Notre Dame has picked up a massive commitment from the 2027 class by landing Waco, Texas/Midway running back Lathan Whisenton. This is a major win for Notre Dame, who dipped down into the Lone Star State for yet another big time offensive player.
Whisenton had a monster junior season for the Panthers, racking up 1,502 yards and 24 touchdowns while averaging 9.1 yards per carry. As a sophomore, Whisenton rushed for 1,289 more yards and 18 touchdowns, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. He enters his senior season with 3,247 rushing yards and 48 touchdowns, with a 7.0 per carry average for his career.
At 5-11 and 195 pounds, Whisenton is a well-built runner that shows impressive leg drive. His contact balance is outstanding, and his ability to run through tackles is one of his best traits. Whisenton hunts contact as a runner, looking to go north-south as soon as possible. He's a patient runner with an impressive downhill burst. His vision impresses and if he needs to make you miss, he can. On top of being a physical runner, Whisenton also shows elite speed. He's a 10.54 in the 100-meter dash, and that track speed shows up on film. If he gets a crease up the middle, or a step on the outside he's going to take it to the house.
This is the fourth running back from Texas that Notre Dame has landed in the last five seasons. It began back in 2022 when the Irish landing Denison star Jadarian Price. Two seasons later, the Irish landed Lufkin standout Kedren Young. Last season, Notre Dame went down to Texas once again to land big time runner Javian Osborne.
Whisenton has an impressive offer list that includes the Irish, Texas, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Florida State, Texas A&M, Florida, Michigan, Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas Tech, SMU, Wisconsin, Missouri, Baylor, Houston, TCU, Minnesota, California, Oklahoma State and Kansas. His academic prowess is shown by earning offers from Notre Dame, Stanford, Northwestern and Vanderbilt.
Notre Dame now has eight players committed in the 2027 class, with Whisenton joining offensive lineman James Halton, offensive lineman Richie Flanigan, linebacker Amarri Irvin, safety Khalil Terry, cornerback Xavier Hasan, cornerback Ace Alton and long snapper Sean Kraft.
