Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame continue to be extremely aggressive during the 2027 recruiting cycle.

Karnell “Greedy” James Jr. is a defensive back from Manvel High School in Manvel, Texas, and according to the 247 Sports Composite, he is rated as a 3-star, ranked as the No. 629 player in the country. He is listed at 6-foot and 170-pounds.

James committed to the Texas Longhorns in December of 2025, picking them over Texas A&M, TCU, Arizona State and a host of others. He has since been offered by other teams such as Florida, Iowa, Missouri and many others which highlight his growing profile.

On the field, James has been productive and physical for Manvel. During his sophomore season, he had 31 tackles, including 5 of them for loss. He also had an interception and seven pass breakups. With his size, James seems to be able to be someone who can play both corner or safety in college and match up with bigger wide receivers on the perimeter.

Notre Dame has recognized Karnell’s growing reputation and is bringing him on campus in hopes to see him flip to the Irish according to a report by On3. New Irish defensive backs coach Aaron Henry offered James in February of 2026 as they continue to fill out their defensive backfield class. If Notre Dame can convince him to come to South Bend, it may suggest that Karnell’s commitment to the Longhorns is more fluid than folks thought.
