Notre Dame to promote from within to fill its LB’s coach vacancy

Notre Dame football lost one of its up-and-coming young coaches when Max Bullough left to be the co-defensive coordinator at his alma mater of Michigan State.
It left a significant hole in the Irish coaching staff, and head coach Marcus Freeman didn’t need to go far to fill the spot. According to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN, Al Washington will be moving from his focus on the defensive line to the linebackers.
This isn’t a foreign position for him to coach, as he previously led the units at Elon, Michigan and then Ohio State. Washington has what it takes to eventually have a larger role, and this is a step in that direction.
He has plenty of experience as a position coach, and he very well could be come a coordinator in the future. Freeman made a wise choice in promoting Washington, as the familiar voice will help ease the loss of Bullough.
