Notre Dame lost 2028 quarterback Trey Tagliaferri to Oklahoma recently. Where does the Fighting Irish turn now?
Notre Dame football has moved past the Trey Tagliaferri saga and is now refocusing its 2028 quarterback recruiting efforts.
The Fighting Irish are expected to circle back to several talented signal callers they had previously evaluated, and one name stands above the rest: 2028 Princeton (NJ) The Hun School quarterback Lukas Prock. Head coach Marcus Freeman, quarterback coach Gino Guidugli, and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock are doing their due diligence before making any aggressive moves, but the early signs point toward Prock as the primary target on Notre Dame’s board.
Why Lukas Prock is the name to watch
With Tagliaferri now committed to Oklahoma, Neimann Lawrence committed to Texas, and Kingston Preyear trending toward a commitment to Alabama, Prock will soon be the only uncommitted quarterback on the 2028 board for the Fighting Irish. That makes him an obvious focal point for Freeman and his staff.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound signal caller is rated as the No. 69 overall player, the No. 8 quarterback, and the No. 3 player from the state of New Jersey for the 2028 class with a four-star rating. He is coming off a dynamic sophomore season for the Hun School, where he threw for 4,330 yards and 41 touchdown passes against only seven interceptions. Prock also added a rushing touchdown while averaging over 10 yards per carry.
It should be no surprise that Prock has a long and impressive offer list to match his overall talent.
Some of the top programs that have offered include Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Penn State, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Auburn, Arkansas, Boston College, Colorado, Cincinnati, Duke, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Pitt, South Carolina, Syracuse, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Washington, and Rutgers, among many others.
Where Notre Dame stands in Prock’s recruitment
Despite Notre Dame technically passing on Prock (at least not playing the long game) in favor of Tagliaferri earlier in the cycle, the Fighting Irish have quickly regained ground. Other schools heavily involved with Prock include Ohio State, Miami, LSU, Penn State, and Indiana, among several others.
Ohio State is the unsettling name on that list, but the Buckeyes are also the perceived leader for elite St. John’s Prep quarterback Christopher Vargas. That dynamic could work in Notre Dame’s favor if Ohio State prioritizes Vargas.
Both Prock and Tagliaferri train with the same private quarterback coach, Tony Racioppi, and that shared relationship adds an interesting layer to this recruitment. Despite that connection, it does seem that Prock is open-minded to the Fighting Irish.
Notre Dame will need patience and precision
From everything I have gathered, the Fighting Irish will need to run a clean process from here with a lower margin for error after how things ended with Tagliaferri. Notre Dame is not expected to be in a major rush. Without a clear timeline, Prock will more than likely be a long-term play for Freeman and his staff.
As they continue to pursue Prock, don’t be surprised if Notre Dame does its due diligence on some other quarterbacks and potentially expands the board at some point. I don’t expect that to happen in the near future. Notre Dame has been judicious with handing out quarterback offers over the last couple of cycles, and the staff has been very particular about who fits the program.
Prock is a player that I expect the Fighting Irish to have a lot of interest in going forward, but this is about a long-term plan of execution. Keep a close eye on the New Jersey signal caller, and understand that Notre Dame is doing a lot of work behind the scenes to prepare for the next wave of 2028 quarterback recruiting.
