The college football season will be here before we know it, and Notre Dame isn’t losing any of the hype that it has built this offseason.

The Irish are one of a few teams that most analysts believe will contend for the College Football Playoff championship, and a lot of it has to do with the defense. Early last season it wasn’t the best start for defensive coordinator Chris Ash, but he quickly turned it around, and by the end, Notre Dame’s defense looked like it was one of the best groups in the country.

Fast forward to this year, and that momentum gained has translated into an elite unit, one that On3’s JD Pickell ranks as the No. 3 unit in the country. In his eyes, only Oregon and Oklahoma have better defenses, which bodes extremely well for Notre Dame’s outlook this fall.

Defense typically travels, and the Irish will come at you in waves. Led by a top secondary with safety Tae Johnson, a linebacker unit with tons of experience and a defensive line with proven talent and potential, Notre Dame shouldn’t give up many points this fall. With such an elite group, it will give the Irish’s offense a chance to catch its footing, as quarterback CJ Carr will be working with multiple new skill position players.

Notre Dame should see plenty of game changing plays on defense this fall, as the unit should be able to propel the Irish to another CFP berth.
