Notre Dame's Recruiting Success Blends Tradition And The New Age

The days of Notre Dame having to shop down a "different aisle" on the recruiting trail are long behind us. For years, we were told by the man running the program that the Irish had to recruit different which put a handicap on their abilities to recruit a top-level class. There's some truth to that because when you're on the staff in South Bend, you do have to recruit differently than other coaching staffs across the country. But that doesn't put a handicap on your overall abilities to bring in a premier recruiting class.
Head coach Marcus Freeman has changed the landscape of Notre Dame recruiting and is fresh off of bringing in the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the country. Unlike his predecessor, Freeman bought in to what makes Notre Dame unlike any other program in the country and that has paid major dividends on the recruiting trail.
In years past, there would have been recruiting battles the Irish would have lost. Under their previous head coach, I don't know if they would have won the recruiting battle against Penn State for Joey O'Brien. I don't think they would have out-battled Alabama for Elijah Golden. Under the previous staff, there was little to no chance of getting a wide receiver like Kaydon Finley to commit to Notre Dame over Texas, an in-state school where his father played. But thankfully, this staff had the chops to do so.
Why is this the case now? I think this staff has done a tremendous job of blending the rich tradition that comes with the University of Notre Dame with the new age of college football.
Let's face the facts, recruiting in 2026 is different than what it was a decade ago. Players can now be paid, high school athletes are able to sign NIL deals with the school they're committing to and the transfer portal concerns continue to grow. Freeman and the Irish have done the best they can navigating both landscapes and they've done it by honing in on what makes Notre Dame special.
Their motto 'Four For Forever' has been a major driver of success. It's not a coincidence that several former NFL players have kids currently at Notre Dame. Hall of famers like Bryant Young and Larry Fitzgerald understand what life is like after football and know what a place like Notre Dame can offer them. The Notre Dame alumni network is next to none, and offers former players like Brandon Wimbush the opportunity to be on Forbes 30 under 30 list.
The rich tradition found in South Bend is unlike any other program in the country. It's considered by many to be the cathedral of college football, but this current administration and current staff is doing their part in also making sure they're modernizing that approach. The campus crossroads project that took place back in the mid 2010's updated a lot of the athletic facilities around campus but maintained the traditional around the stadium that makes Notre Dame unique.
The Shields Family Hall project will be completed this year and will be another addition that adds to the modernization of Notre Dame's campus and football program. The state of the art facility will feature a new dining hall specifically for athletes and various training rooms.
It's a unique job recruiting at Notre Dame, because the approach is different and that's something this new staff has embraced. But different doesn't mean you have to settle for anything less than championship-caliber. All it means is that you might have to work harder than other programs. Freeman and this staff have done a tremendous job of blending the rich traditions at Notre Dame and molding their approach to this new age of college football and it's produced some head-turning results.
