Oaks Christian restructures football program, hires Carlton as coach

Oaks Christian School has restructured its football program dramatically.

The Westlake Village school announced the hiring of Rudy Carlton as the fifth head coach in school history, former NFL defensive back Ron Pitts as the head of football operations and the creation of a new “football advisory council.”

Carlton, who had been the offensive coordinator of JSerra Catholic for the past three seasons, succeeds Charlie Collins, who was 58-34 (.630) over the previous eight seasons.

The Lions were 6-7 in 2025, when they finished second in the Marmonte League and reached the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 semifinals.

Carlton, a Littleton, Colorado, native, is a former quarterback and head coach of Azusa Pacific University. He was previously the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of West Florida.

Competing in the Trinity League, JSerra made the postseason in two of the three seasons in which Carlton coached at the San Juan Capistrano school.

Pitts is a former Fox, CBS and NBC sportscaster and football analyst. The UCLA alum played cornerback for seven seasons in the NFL with Green Bay and Buffalo.

His father Elijah was a member of five NFL championship teams with Vince Lombardi’s Packers, including the first two Super Bowl champions in 1966 and 1967. His sons Lee and Shea are 2016 and 2017 Oaks Christian graduates, respectively.

“Pitts will have overall responsibility for ensuring the ‘One Oaks Christian’ team culture as well as coordinating synergy between the middle school and high school football programs,” the school said in a statement.

Pitts will also work with the Oaks Christian Football Advisory Council, which will consist of alumni “currently playing in the NFL,” parents who have “excelled in the sport to the highest level” and community supporters “who have played in the NFL and wish to be part of creating something special by developing and mentoring young student athletes.”

The program has six alumni currently playing in the NFL and more than 10 parents who have NFL experience, according to the school.

“The Oaks Christian athletic administration and senior leadership is dedicated to the development of young men’s character through the sport of football as we look to further enhance the school’s pillar of ‘athletic distinction,’ ” the school said in the release.

“Oaks Christian remains steadfastly committed to living out the school’s mission in everything, and is excited to announce these key positions and looks forward to building out the football program staff in the weeks ahead.”

Carlton and Pitts begin their new roles on Feb. 2.
