With Clemson preparing for its postseason matchup against Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl on December 27, much of the conversation around the program has drifted toward offensive coordinator Garrett Riley and what comes next for him beyond this season. Riley, now wrapping up his third year calling plays for the Tigers, briefly found himself connected to head coaching openings at Coastal Carolina and North Texas before both schools ultimately filled their vacancies.
As the bowl game draws closer, Riley has made it clear his attention isn’t on speculation or future possibilities. Instead, his focus is firmly on Clemson and the opportunity to close the season the right way.
“Every year this is kind of a wild time for everybody,” Riley said Wednesday during the Pinstripe Bowl virtual press conference. “With as much change as there is, you’re trying to figure out your team for the bowl, who’s playing, recruiting. I feel like I’m almost used to it. You just have to take it day by day with this job.”
The expectations surrounding Riley’s offense entering 2025 were significant, especially with Cade Klubnik returning at quarterback alongside a veteran offensive line and a highly regarded group of receivers. While Clemson has shown flashes, the overall results have been uneven, ranking 20th nationally in passing offense but lagging behind in several other key categories.
Despite that, Riley emphasized his commitment to finishing strong and doing what’s best for his players.
“My whole focus is on operating here at Clemson,” Riley said. “It’s an unbelievable place to work and live. We certainly didn’t have the season we all wanted, but sometimes that’s sports.”

When asked directly about his future in 2026, Riley acknowledged decisions remain ahead for head coach Dabo Swinney. For now, though, nothing beyond Penn State is occupying his mind.
“I know there are decisions to be made big picture-wise,” Riley said. “But my whole focus is being here, being the best I can for our staff and our players, and giving us the best chance to cap this thing off with a great bowl win.”
