Highlights
The Tale
Penn State went all in on Peter Bourque after he decommitted from Michigan, but heavy hitters Georgia and Ohio State entered the fray late, and Virginia Tech, Penn State’s former staff, also turned up the heat on that recruitment eventually getting Bourque’s pledge. As a result, Matt Campbell and staff pivoted to Will Wood.
Wood has been wowing scouts as of late, and the staff responded in kind. Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser, quarterbacks coach Jake Waters, and a total of five coaches visited Wood in early May, showing the quarterback they meant business. Boston College, the local school, and one with another former Penn State coach, was making a serious push for Wood as well, but Campbell and staff got him over the hump.
Outlook
Two months ago this would have seemed like a consolation prize, but Wood has been putting in the work to show he’s a quality prospect in his own right. He’s now the No. 3 player in Massachusetts and is rising up the quarterback rankings, with a build similar to current Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht.
Penn State brought in Peyton Falzone, Kase Evans, Alex Manske, and Connor Barry to back up Rocco Becht for 2025. Falzone may be playing a different position if he stays with the Lions, Manske has an undefined return timeline from his injury, and Barry will be out of eligibility along with Becht. This leaves Wood with plenty of opportunity to take the job as early as his freshman season, though the possibility that Penn State goes portal for its starting 2027 quarterback becomes likelier and likelier.
