We’re in a key recruting period for the Ohio State Buckeyes. What happens now will have a major impact on the 2027 recruiting class, so Ohio State is trying to get in with a major recruit in SEC land.

We’re in a pivotal recruiting period for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State picked up commitment No. 12 for the class of 2027 over the weekend by adding four-star EDGE Wyatt Smith, but a lot of work remains to be done.

Ohio State has a few fewer commitments than the top teams so far for 2027 high school recruiting, but things are beginning to pick up. The Buckeyes have been on the road conducting visits lately and handing out new offers. Ohio State’s newest defensive target is a former Clemson Tigers commitment that Ohio State is trying to land over a major SEC program.

Ohio State is trying to find its next Caleb Downs in the state of Georgia

2027 three-star Lakeside (GA) S Seth Williams was committed to Clemson for just a couple of weeks before he backed off the commitment on April 9. Since then, there have been several schools trying to get in on the 6-foot-2, 180-pound safety out of Georgia.

Ohio State safeties coach Matt Guerrieri became the latest coach to offer Williams over the weekend, and the Buckeyes are firmly in the mix.

“Ohio State is major!,” Williams said via Lettermen Row. “Just seeing a great player from my home state that plays the same position as me just win a national championship and get drafted top 12 in the draft with the Buckeyes is special in its own. As well as the chance to play for a NFL defensive coordinator. Of course playing for Ryan Day would be sweet too. I’d be going against arguably the best receivers in America everyday at practice. Ohio State is also just as good as any other school with getting defensive backs drafted. I wouldn’t mind playing with DJ Jacobs getting after the passer either! I would definitely enjoy that.”

Ohio State is battling Clemson and the Florida Gators most notably to land Williams. Caleb Downs comes from the Georgia area and his impact at Ohio State has caught the attention of the three-star safety. At this time, Williams has official visits scheduled to Clemson and Florida at the end of May and the first weekend of June. The Georgia native is working on setting up an official with Ohio State, per Lettermen Row.

The home state Georgia Bulldogs and Michigan are still schools recruiting Williams as well. According to 247 Sports Composite, Williams is the No. 848 player nationally and No. 87 safety in the class.

What Ohio State looks like at the safety spot going forward

Ohio State has a pair of safety commits this class already with four-star Eli Johnson and three-star Angelo Smith, who is the brother of Jeremiah Smith. Ohio State brought elite safety recruit Blaine Bradford, as well as former four-star recruits Khmari Bing and Simeon Caldwell in as current freshmen.

After losing Caleb Downs to the NFL, Ohio State is set to start Jaylen McClain once again in 2026 with transfers Terry Moore and Earl Little Jr. also playing roles. Leroy Roker will be another name to watch for the Buckeyes on the back end in 2026.
