Despite Ohio State's 24-14 Cotton Bowl loss to the Miami Hurricanes, which officially marked the end of the Buckeyes' quest for a repeat national title, it gave AD Ross Bjork a chance to reflect on the state of the football program and where it is headed next fall.
Ultimately, in a statement posted Friday, Bjork is confident coach Ryan Day can steer the ship forward, having just reached the sport's mountaintop last winter.
“When our Ohio State Football season doesn’t end the way we expected, it’s hard to overcome the sting, but it’s also healthy and productive to reflect and focus on who we are as Buckeyes,” Bjork posted. "Our players and coaches are the hardest-working group in the country and when the results don’t end our way, it hurts. Our players represent Ohio State in a first-class manner on and off the field, and Coach Day is the best leader in college football and sets the foundation of embracing high expectations while also executing the fundamentals of what it takes to be at the pinnacle of college football."
Bjork said that while the loss is difficult to accept, sometimes, it makes team stronger when facing adversity.
“Every program in the country craves to have the long-term consistency and the brand power that has been established here in Columbus," Bjork added. "As we move ahead, the Circle of Care is well established and our program is build on the People, the Tradition, and the Excellence and those core values will never change. … The campaign to get better never stops, the journey into 2026 is only beginning, and there is no ceiling on the upside that lies ahead for our entire athletics program.”
Ohio State may have some tweaks to fix, but given that the off-season has just begun, it still has the capability to fix the necessary flaws to get ready for a potential playoff run next year.
It remains to be seen if Bjork's words will hold weight, but if they do, the Buckeyes should be just fine going into next year, or even if the stigma attached to them is now downgraded because they didn't win another national title.
Come August, we will find out
