Ohio State coach Ryan Day says he would like an expanded College Football Playoff.
Appearing on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on Dec. 11, Day said would like to see 20 teams in the CFP.
“I like the playoff system,” Day said. “I think it allows your teams to grow and build as the season goes on. … If you win your conference, you should be in, kind of like the basketball tournament, but I would be in favor of expanding the field.”
Smith pressed Day with the number of teams he would add to the CFP.
“I would go all the way to 20,” Day said. “I think it’s good for football. I think it’s good for everybody. You’ve seen a lot of these schools opt out of bowl games, which is just not good for the sport, and I think the more teams involved in the postseason the better.
Day and Ohio State have made the 12-team playoff in their first two seasons of the expanded field, winning the national championship in 2024 and placing as the No. 2 seed in 2025.
Bracket seeding rules were altered in 2025 to give conference champions ranked outside the top 25 the lowest seeds of the tournament.
