Ohio State coach Ryan Day and assistants and staffers are due to add more than $3 million to their combined total of postseason bonuses after the Buckeyesreceived a College Football Playoff berth this week, according to copies of their contracts obtained by The Dispatch through a public-records request.
The total for Day and 13 assistant coaches and staff members reached $4.3 million between the incentives tied to the Buckeyes’ appearance in the Big Ten championship game and at-large spot in the playoff.
Day is due $300,000 for the Buckeyes’ bye into the quarterfinals as one of the top four seeds. The bonuses for the 10 countable assistant coaches, as well as strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti, general manager Mark Pantoni and chief of staff Quinn Tempel, are all worth amounts equal to 20% of their base salaries.
Matt Patricia, the longtime NFL assistant and head coach who replaced Jim Knowles as defensive coordinator last February, is set to add the highest payout for the quarterfinal appearance, a bonus worth $500,000 that brings his compensation for this season to more than $3 million.
Offensive coordinator Brian Hartline is to add the second-highest amount at $400,000. While Hartline accepted a head coaching job at South Florida last week, he is remaining with the Buckeyes through the playoff and continues to be eligible to earn additional bonuses, according to a school spokesperson.
Tim Walton, the co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach, receives the next-largest amount for the playoff berth at $360,000.
All of Ohio State’s top assistant coaches and staff are due to earn six figures in postseason incentives.
Their bonus pay increases by percentage points if the Buckeyes advance to the semifinals and finals, and a repeat title would leave them eligible for incentives worth 35% of their base salaries.
The Buckeyes, who were seeded second by the selection committee, are scheduled to face the winner of No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 10 Miami in a quarterfinal hosted by the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
