Ohio State football remains mum on statuses of Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate for Rutgers

Ohio State coach Ryan Day kept tight-lipped about the statuses of injured wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate.

Day was largely vague for the second straight day as he addressed their health following the Buckeyes’ practice on Nov. 19, leaving their availability for this week’s game against Rutgers up in the air.

“They’re working hard to get back on the field,” Day said. “That’s it. That’s what they’re focused on. I don’t have much more of an update.”

Day said a day earlier that the Buckeyes were taking it day-to-day with the receivers. They held out Tate during their past two games and limited Smith’s snaps in last week’s 48-10 win over UCLA.

Smith made an early exit late in the second quarter after catching four passes for 40 yards in their rout of the Bruins. He was later seen limping on the sideline at Ohio Stadium.  

Both receivers are considered among the best in the nation and were selected as semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, the top individual award for their position.

Smith leads the Buckeyes with 69 catches for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns, and Tate has 39 receptions for 711 yards and seven touchdowns, providing frequent targets for quarterback Julian Sayin.

Day has not suggested either of them are expected to miss an extended period of time. Following their victory over UCLA, he said he did not have long-term concerns.
