Ohio State football vs. Purdue Boilermakers complete preview and prediction for Week 11

With just four games to go in the regular season, things could not be going much better for the Ohio State football team. The Buckeyesare No. 1 in all the major polls, including the one that counts the most, the College Football Playoff rankings. And now Ohio State gets a bit of a rest with a weaker part of the schedule coming up over the next few weeks before heading to Ann Arbor.

Up this week, the Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue has looked like a team trying to find its way under new head coach Barry Odom. Odom came to West Lafayette after stints at Missouri and, most recently, taking UNLV to a 10-3 record last season. But the Big Ten is a different animal. The Boilers faced Michigan last week and host the Buckeyes this week.

Purdue gave the Wolverines all they could handle on Saturday night. Will the Boilermakers be able to give Ohio State the same kind of trouble? Time to find out as the Scarlet and Gray head to Ross-Ade.

Ohio State potential game plan for victory vs. Purdue

Let’s be honest, Purdue is not a very good football team. The Boilermakers are riding a seven-game losing streak, with their only two wins coming early in the year against Ball State and Southern Illinois. That’s not to say Purdue won’t give its best shot. Against Notre Dame, the Boilers put up 30 points. Against Illinois, another 27. Even last week, they pushed Michigan to the brink, losing by a score of 21-16.

However, Purdue hasn’t faced a defense like Ohio State. Quarterback Ryan Browne has only found the end zone nine times this season and has been intercepted seven times… not a great ratio. On top of that, running back Devin Mockobee will not be suiting up as he’s been ruled out for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury. It’s a big blow to lose Mockobee as he is the fourth on the all-time rushing list at Purdue. Even if Mockobee were available, it would be hard for this team to move the ball against the Buckeye defense.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Boilermakers give up points like their handing out candy on Halloween, and that’s a bad combination when facing an OSU offensive attack that is getting better and better by the week.

Purdue does have three guys that can get to the quarterback in CJ Nunnally, Charles Correa, and Mani Powell, but the Ohio State offensive line has been one of the best at protecting its quarterback. Julian Sayin has only been sacked three times this year, which is one reason he’s having a Heisman frontrunning season. Facing a defense that is ranked 103rd in the country should lead to some offensive fireworks for the Scarlet and Gray.

Max Klare – Tight End

It will be a homecoming of sorts for tight end Max Klare, who spent his first two years in West Lafayette before transferring to Ohio State this year. You might not realize it, but Klare is third on the team in receptions with 21, behind Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate. The coaching staff will definitely look for ways to get Klare involved in the passing attack early.

Caden Curry – Defensive End

Caden Curry is an Indiana native, and when guys go home, there’s usually a little extra motivation. Curry is already having a breakout season, leading the No. 1 defense in the land with seven sacks. He’s bound to add to that total, facing a Purdue offensive line that has given up 32 sacks on the year.

The prediction? In the words of Clubber Lang from Rocky III … “Pain.” Ohio State is as focused as a defending champion has ever been. It’s been the mantra all season long that last year was great, but this is an entirely different team that hasn’t proven anything yet. Yes, chaos can happen on any given Saturday, but it isn’t going to happen this week. Ohio State rolls to an easy victory.
