Ohio State football has secured one of the biggest commitments of the 2028 recruiting cycle, landing five-star quarterback Christopher Vargas from St. John’s Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts. Vargas announced on Saturday that he will play for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes, choosing Ohio State over a long list of major programs, including Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Penn State, LSU, Texas A&M, Florida and Stanford.
Vargas is widely regarded as one of the premier players in his class. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the No. 1 quarterback and No. 6 overall recruit in the 2028 class. Rivals has Vargas as the No. 1 quarterback in its Rivals300, while the USA TODAY Sports 2028 composite also places him sixth overall and first among quarterbacks.
The 6-foot-4 Vargas has developed into a highly productive passer at St. John’s Prep. As a freshman in 2022, he helped the Eagles finish 10-2 while throwing for 1,311 yards and 17 touchdowns. The following season, St. John’s Prep went 11-2, with Vargas completing 66.7% of his passes for 2,038 yards and 24 touchdowns to three interceptions.

The Buckeyes’ recruitment of Vargas dates back to Nov. 30, 2024, when Ohio State became one of the first Power Four programs to offer him. He subsequently made several trips to Columbus, including an unofficial visit on March 28 and another visit in June, when he participated in a camp and 7-on-7 competition. Those visits helped Vargas build a meaningful relationship with Day and the Buckeyes’ coaching staff.
Vargas now becomes the centerpiece of an Ohio State 2028 class that already includes wide receiver Jett Harrison, edge rusher Jameer Whyce and running back Elijah Newman-Hall. The Buckeyes are ranked among the top two 2028 classes by 247Sports, with four commitments.
Ohio State also has four-star quarterback Brady Edmunds committed for 2027, giving Day commitments at quarterback in consecutive recruiting classes.
