Following a busy spring, Ohio State has been on a recruiting hot streak over the last several weeks. Landing a handful of recent commitments, the Buckeyes’ 2027 class is now up to No. 7 overall, with the fourth-best per-player ranking in the country — mere percentage points behind the top three.
Things have slowed down a bit since the beginning of this current dead period, which lasts until the end of July, but there is still plenty to be excited about on the near horizon.
While coaches can’t directly contact players at this time, good news on the trail continues to flow for the Buckeyes. On Saturday night, 2028 four-star quarterback Lukas Prock announced his top five schools, with Ohio State making the cut alongside Florida, Indiana, Michigan and Notre Dame.
Prock checks in as the No. 6 QB and No. 69 player nationally per the 247Sports Composite, also ranking as the No. 3 player in New Jersey. With an offer sheet containing a whopping 40 schools, cutting his list down to a final five is a big deal, and Ohio State obviously remains a premier destination for quarterback talent.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound QB threw for more than 4,300 yards with 42 touchdowns in a huge sophomore season, completing over 73% of his pass attempts. A native of Massachusetts, Prock transferred to Hun in Princeton, NJ after a freshman season at Wellesley High in which he threw for more than 2,100 yards with 25 touchdowns and only four picks.
Ohio State, despite its track record of success at the position, is in a bit of a tricky spot with its quarterback recruiting at the moment.
After being a leader in the class since his commitment, Buckeyes’ 2027 QB commit Brady Edmunds is now deciding between sticking with his pledge to play in Columbus or flipping his commitment to UCLA. Ohio State is also still actively pursuing the nation’s top QB in the 2028 class, having turned up the heat with five-star Christopher Vargas as of late.
Prock becomes another intriguing name for Ryan Day and company, which is at least set at quarterback for the next few years with Julian Sayin at the helm in 2026 and Tavien St. Clair waiting the wings.
Elsewhere, Ohio State will soon learn its fate with five-star wide receiver Monshun Sales. The No. 2 WR and No. 8 overall player in the 2027 class will be deciding this coming Friday, July 17, among a final group that includes the Buckeyes alongside Alabama, Indiana, LSU and Texas.
As of right now, it sounds like Ohio State is on the outside looking in for the 6-foot-5 pass-catcher.
The Buckeyes obviously remain in the running down to the final buzzer, and in the world of NIL no recruitment is ever truly over, but at this current moment it seems like the Hoosiers or the Longhorns will be on the receiving end of Sales’ commitment come this weekend.
New position coach Carlos Hankton has seen some fantastic early returns, retaining five-star wideout Jamier Brown in 2027 in addition to landing five-star 2028 receiver Jett Harrison, the younger brother of Marvin Harrison Jr., but this is likely a bidding war Ohio State can’t win if it comes down to it.
The NFL Draft has proven time and time again that Columbus is the place to be if you want to be developed as a wide receiver for the next level, and that pipeline doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon, but Sales likely won’t be the next name on that long list of success stories.
Quick Hits
In addition to Sales, four-star defensive lineman Karlos May is set to announce his commitment this coming Saturday, July 18. The Alabama native is the No. 11 DL and No. 120 prospect nationally in the 2027 class per 247Sports, and will choose between Auburn, Georgia, Florida State and Ohio State.
The Buckeyes appear to be in an incredibly favorable position for May, as all the latest On3 Recruiting Machine Predictions, including from OSU insider Alex Gleitman just last week, have Ohio State as the most likely destination. It would be another big win for position coach Larry Johnson, who already owns commitments from five-stars DJ Jacobs and Marcus Fakatou as well as high four-star Wyatt Smith.
Anything can happen in recruiting, so we will have to wait and see when May makes his official announcement on Saturday.
