Ohio State Newcomer has Turned Heads While Making First Impression in Columbus

For the first time in several years, the Ohio State wide receiver room can be viewed as a legitimate question mark heading into the 2026 season.

Since 2020, the Buckeyes have had at least one, maybe two, first-round draft picks in that room. Heading into 2026, the Buckeyes have Jeremiah Smith, who is likely the best player in all of college football.

Behind him, no one really knows what to expect.

Ohio State went shopping in the transfer portal this offseason. They gave up on two five-star players in Mylan Graham and Quincy Porter Jr., who both hit the road for Notre Dame. They replaced those two players with Kyle Parker from LSU and Devin McCuin from UTSA.

They joined the room that had Smith and incumbent Brandon Inniss.

On Friday, I asked beat reporter Dillon Davis about what that room looks like so far in Spring, and he had a glowing report on McCuin, who I view as a major risk.

McCuin spent three seasons at UTSA and put up numbers that are modest at best. He played consistently since his first year and put up career numbers last sesaon for the Roadrunners.

Last year, he finished with 65 catches for 726 yards and eight touchdowns. That totals career numbers of 152 catches, 1,696 yards, and 16 touchdowns in his three-year career.

From a stats perspective, there are a lot of questions that could be asked about his potential production, but from a skillset standpoint, he might be the perfect fit for the  Buckeyes.

Standing at just 6'0" tall, he is not a serious vertical threat. However, what he does have is elite speed. He can run away from just about anyone, and in this offense, that might be exactly what the doctor ordered.

With Jeremiah Smith's ability to stretch the field, and frankly, the threat he poses the moment he gets off the bus, his perfect complement is a speed demon.

One thing that college offenses and wide receivers can really major in is the ability to scheme up and run away from man-to-man coverage. If Jeremiah Smith gets two sets of eyes on him at all times, then the other guys are going to have to be able to create space and get open. No questions asked.

Saturday in Columbus will be our first look at McCuin, and if he lives up to reports, the Buckeyes could have something really good on their hands.
