Ohio State vs. Texas Preview: Two Powerhouses Collide In Massive Week 2 Showdown

College football does not have to wait long for a massive matchup.

No. 1 Ohio State will travel to Austin on Saturday night to take on No. 5 Texas in one of the most anticipated games of the 2026 season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, with the game airing on ABC.

Both teams enter the matchup 1-0 after dominant season-opening victories, but Saturday will provide the first true test for either program.

Ohio State Looks To Prove It Is Still No. 1

The Buckeyes opened the season by crushing Ball State 56-3.

Quarterback Julian Sayin will now face a completely different challenge in his first road start against an elite Texas defense. Sayin was impressive in his first start against Texas last season, but this time he will have to handle the pressure of playing in Austin.

One of Ohio State’s biggest weapons will once again be wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.

Texas has had success limiting Smith in previous meetings, meaning the Buckeyes may need other playmakers to step up if the Longhorns focus heavily on stopping their star receiver.

Arch Manning Gets Another Chance

For Texas quarterback Arch Manning, this game represents an opportunity for redemption.

Manning struggled against Ohio State in last year’s 14-7 loss, throwing for 170 yards, one touchdown and an interception. This time, however, he enters the matchup with more experience and confidence.

Manning opened the 2026 season by throwing for 305 yards and four touchdowns in Texas’ 59-7 victory over Texas State.

Now he gets another opportunity to prove he can lead the Longhorns past the Buckeyes.

A Rematch With Massive Playoff Implications

This game carries enormous implications despite being only Week 2.

Ohio State and Texas are both expected to be College Football Playoff contenders, and a victory Saturday could become extremely important when playoff seeding is determined later in the season.

Texas also has revenge on its mind after losing to Ohio State in the 2024 College Football Playoff semifinal and again last season.

This time, the Longhorns have home-field advantage.

Who Wins The Showdown?

This game could come down to which quarterback handles the pressure better.

Sayin has the experience of beating Texas, while Manning enters the rematch with something to prove.

Ohio State has the talent to win anywhere in the country, but Texas will have more than 100,000 fans behind it in Austin.

The Buckeyes enter as the No. 1 team in the country, but Texas has an opportunity to make the biggest statement of Week 2.

If the Buckeyes win in Austin, Ryan Day’s team will immediately have one of the strongest résumés in the country. If Texas wins, the Longhorns could announce themselves as the team to beat in the SEC and college football.
