Ohio State vs. Texas: Series history before Austin showdown

The Ohio State vs Texas rivalry may be brief by blue blood standards but all of the games have significant impacts on their respective college football seasons.

The first-ever meeting between the two programs occurred in September 2005, in a game the Longhorns won 25-22 over the Buckeyes, and then went on to win the National Championship that season.

One year later, No. 1 Ohio State travelled to Austin and defeated Texas 24-7. The Buckeyes' quarterback Troy Smith threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns and the defense stifled the Longhorns at their home and it continues to be the most lopsided result in the series.

The next meeting between the two programs was at the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, where Texas earned a 24-21 victory in Glendale, Arizona. Ohio State had taken a late fourth-quarter lead, but the Longhorns were able to convert a late field goal and take a 2-1 overall series lead.

The Buckeyes have been able to swing the momentum back to their favor the last two seasons. On January 10, 2025 the Buckeyes prevailed over the Longhorns 28-14 in the Cotton Bowl as part of the College Football Playoff.

And just last season, Ohio State opened its 2025 schedule with a 14-7 victory over Texas. The result pushed the overall record to 3-2 in the Buckeyes favor and they will be hoping to make it three in a row this Saturday when they face the Longhorns in Austin.
