LAWRENCE TWP. — The first week of the high school football season is in the books and Week 2 is ready to begin. Tonight we have a matchup of former Northeastern Buckeye Conference rivals when Marlington travels to take on Northwest.
Marlington opened the season with a 31-6 over Warrensville Heights while Northwest beat Alliance 16-0.

Marlington vs. Northwest football primer
- The Dukes and Northwest will meet in the regular season for the sixth consecutive year. Northwest is 1-4 in those games and won last year 35-0. Marlington's last win over Northwest came in 2023 (31-14).
- Marlington is searching for its first playoff appearance since 2020. The Dukes have dealt with serious injuries the past two seasons but the Dukes are healthy entering Week 2. Marlington is assigned to Division IV, Region 13 this year.
- Northwest has qualified for the playoffs seven consecutive years. Northwest is a perennial contender for the PAC-7 championship. Northwest is also assigned to Division IV, Region 13 this year.
Meet the Marlington and Northwest head coaches
- Joe Cardinal, Marlington: Cardinal is 11-19 and in his fourth year at Marlington. Cardinal spent one year as the head coach at Northwestern prior to coming to Marlington. Cardinal went 9-3 that season and helped the Huskies win a Wayne County Athletic League championship. Prior to that, Cardinal was a defensive coordinator with Ravenwood High School in Tennessee. Ravenwood was 38-4 and won a Tennessee state championship in 2015 with Cardinal on staff.
- John DeMarco, Northwest: DeMarco has a record of 42-24 in six years at Northwest. He has not missed the playoffs as a head coach at Northwest. DeMarco was the head coach at Louisville for nine years prior to coming to Northwest. He went 65-29 from 2010 to 2018 with the Leopards. DeMarco made three playoff appearances, won three league championships and at one point won 23 consecutive Northeastern Buckeye Conference games as the head coach at Northwest.
Marlington football's top players
- Cameron Evanich, WR-RB-DB: Evanich is a Division I caliber player that will line up all over the field on offense. Evanich got off to a strong start to the season with four catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. He also led the Dukes in rushing in Week 1 with 70 yards on 10 carries.
- Cole Bates, LB-RB: Bates was a force in Week 1. He recovered two fumbles an scored a defensive touchdown in the win over Warrensville Heights. Bates also recorded a rushing touchdown.
- Tyler Walter, QB: Walter is a sophomore and is a two-year starter for the Dukes. Walter has a nice arm and threw for 170 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 against Warrensville Heights.
Northwest football's top players
- Conner Stephenson, LB-RB: Stephenson is a force at LB. He has a motor that never stops and gives Northwest sideline-to-sideline coverage. Stephenson was credited with 18 tackles in Week 1 against Alliance. Stephenson will also get carries at RB on offense.
- Jakob Garber, LB-RB: Another top end linebacker that helped contribute to a shutout against Alliance. Garber also makes contributions on offense and special teams. He ran for 55 yards and a touchdown and also serves as the punter for Northwest. Garber had a long punt of 45 yards and averaged 36.2 yards on five kicks last season.
- Brayden Venables, QB: Venables is a threat to run or throw the ball for Northwest. He also contributes as a kick and punt returner on special teams. Venables threw for 44 yards last week in the win over Alliance.
