A College Football Playoff appearance has led to a significant pay raise for Oklahoma coach Brent Venables.
Per ESPN, Venables and Oklahoma have agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2031 season. As part of the contract, Venables will have an average salary of $10.5 million over the remaining six years of his deal.
Oklahoma went 10-3 in 2025 and made the playoff for the first time since the 2019 season. The Sooners beat Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and LSU in November to earn a playoff spot before losing 34-24 to the Tide in the first round.
It was a four-win jump for Oklahoma from a 6-7 mark in its first season in the SEC.
According to USA Today's coaching salary database, Venables made just over $7.5 million in 2025 and was the 23rd-highest paid coach in the country just behind Washington's Jedd Fisch and ahead of former Florida coach Billy Napier.
Nine coaches made over $10 million in 2025 and five of them had salaries north of $10.5 million. Of the coaches making over $10 million, four were in the SEC — Georgia's Kirby Smart, Texas' Steve Sarkisian, Alabama's Kalen DeBoer and now-former LSU coach Brian Kelly.
New LSU coach Lane Kiffin made $9 million in 2025 and signed a seven-year deal worth over $90 million with the Tigers at the end of the 2025 season.
Oklahoma is 32-20 in Venables' four seasons with the school. The Sooners have finished 10-3 twice and also 6-7 twice. The longtime college assistant was a defensive coordinator at Oklahoma and Clemson before he was hired to replace Lincoln Riley.
