Oklahoma football got off to a bit of a slow start in the Brent Venables era, but the Sooner got right back to the top of college football in 2025. Oklahoma finished the regular season 10-2 last season thanks to a great defense, earning a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Now, it all becomes about backing it up for Oklahoma. The Sooners have very high expectations coming into every season, but things are only getting tougher in the SEC.
Venables is trying to keep up in the SEC by winning on the recruiting trail, and that’s exactly what he did on Monday. On Monday, star 2027 cornerback recruit Gabriel Osborne Jr. committed to Oklahoma over a number of other top programs, per Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports.
Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State and Miami (FL) were also in the mix for Osborne. However, the Mustang High School star is an Oklahoma native, so it comes as no surprise to see him staying home in Norman.
On3 Sports and Rivals ranks Osborne as the No. 42 overall player in the class of 2027. The four-star recruit is the third-ranked player in the state of Oklahoma and the sixth-ranked cornerback in the class, so this is a major get for Oklahoma.
It’s easy to see why many teams are enamored with Osborne when you see his frame. He is listed at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, and his size and length at the position gives him a lot of potential moving forward with a chance to grow under a great defensive mind like Venables.
While Osborne won’t be a part of Oklahoma’s push toward an SEC Championship and another trip to the College Football Playoff this season, the Sooners still have a good chance to get that done. John Mateer is back at quarterback, and Venables should have a very good defense at his disposal again even after the loss of star pass rusher R Mason Thomas and others.
After landing Osborne, it’s clear that Oklahoma is going to be a team to watch both next season and years into the future.
